To move to NYC? (or to commute)

moving closer

To move to NYC? What do you consider to be a better option? Nearly 1 million people travel to work in NYC every day. Average they spend 72 minutes daily in transport. Five days a week, 20 working days minimum in a month, 11 months a year (not counting vacation). If you ask them, many will say that it is a way of life and that they can’t do it in any other way

How long is not too long?

According to some studies, people travel for work to NYC longer than in any other city in the USA. If you use public transport, you need 53 minutes a day, whether car users will need approximately 40 minutes to get to work. When you add that you have to return home from your job, you realize that you lose a significant amount of time in transport. Also, long commuting can be harmful to our productivity and health. People can be under stress if they don’t catch transport on time or get stuck in traffic. That means that you are late for work or late to pick up your kid from school. It also means that you come tired to work, which can greatly impact your productivity. You may not be able to focus on work assignments. You can also get in various discussions with your colleagues, which is not good if you are working in a company with many employees. Commuting also has a bad influence on your health. If you travel during the rush hour, it will increase your blood pressure, which can lead to serious cardiovascular problems. Your anxiety will be higher than usual, and it will have negative consequences on your back (because you will spend a lot of time in the seat, as a passenger, or as a driver).

For all these reasons, have you ever considered hiring a moving company and scheduling a move to someplace that is closer to your work?

Well, a lot of people will say no. Why not? Because they see some good sides of it. Commuting helps them to switch between roles at home and roles at work. While they are traveling, especially if they are not driving, their minds wander around, which can lead to unexpected solutions to usual problems at work. They have time to check their social networks, answer some messages and schedule some private appointments. They can read their favorite book or listen to their favorite music. If they have to walk at least some distance to work, it impacts their physical condition. They do not have to go to the gym. Commuting saves you money for rent and lets you spend some time with your family after work. No place is like home: family support and good homemade food. In the end, that is the main reason why people refuse to move.

Still not sure what to do? To move or to travel to work?

To move to NYC

If you are not sure whether you should move closer to your job or continue traveling, you should think about the following:

Does your company cover the expenses of traveling?

Some companies offer to cover the travel cost. Some of them partly cover it. It is important to check your company’s policy regarding travel expenses. If they even offer to cover at least one part of your cover expenses, it will mean a lot to you and your budget. You can spend that money on something else or save it.

Does it make sense to move closer to your office?

Ask yourself if moving closer will save you any money? Perhaps you live in an expensive part of the city or spend too much money on gas and your vehicle’s service. Then moving closer to your office will help you save some money. You may also find a cheaper apartment. In that case, moving also makes sense. You don’t lose anything if you check the prices of apartments in the area closer to your job. You may find something that works for you with a bit of luck.

Can you move away from your family and friends?

Moving away may ruin your family balance. Maybe you have old parents that need help every day. Or your children like to go to school in your neighborhood. Or you don’t want to leave your friends behind, because you will not see them often if you move away.

If you decide to commute, think about the ways of traveling you prefer and that do not require too much money (maybe you can share travel costs with someone traveling in the same direction, mainly if you use your car). Or maybe you just like watching through the window or reading your favorite magazine. In that case, you should choose trains, buses, subways, taxis, etc.

If you decide to move, hire a professional moving company. Many moving companies offer excellent service for fair prices, so you don’t have to do everything yourself. The moving process requires serious planning, so hiring a professional is always better. To find a good moving company it is best to ask your friends who have already moved. You may even get a discount if you are a referral. If you decide to move by yourself, you can always rent a moving truck and hire one more professional mover who will help you. (you may need help with moving bigger furniture pieces or disassembling and reassembling, packing and unpacking, loading and unloading).
